THE KNOT C.I.S.

The creation of a civil society in the countries of the CIS and, as a matter of fact of all the countries of the former Warsaw pact, is a unique and unprecedented process in history.

An enormous region of states decided to completely draw up a new architecture of politics, society and economics. But were the creation of a democratic society in the so-called ‘Western Countries’ was the result of active groups in society itself, in these new democracies it is going the other way around. It is there where problems arose and still arise. Recreating a society is not something that can be done overnight as it should come from the people themselves and that takes time.

The Knot experiences that there are many blanks in this process to be filled in and that new challenges are arising. These are, for example:

  • Overall weakness of NGO sector
  • Lack of clear democratic and participatory policies
  • NGO’s facing organisational difficulties
  • Underdeveloped democratic leadership
  • Lack of a clear concept of voluntary work
  • NGO’s as seen as small business
